Why It’s Best to Exercise with a Bare Face

We hate to break it to you, but you really shouldn’t wear makeup while exercising. Sure, you like to look tip-top at the gym, and sure, maybe you don’t feel like taking the time to remove your makeup before you hit the treadmill…

But here are the top 3 reasons why you should sweat your stuff with a fresh face:

  1. Dilated pores. When you exercise, you pores will dilate to increase circulation. That’s a really great thing, but if you are wearing makeup, your dilated pores will absorb more of the toxins from your makeup into your bloodstream. (As a general rule, your skin absorbs 60% of everything you put on it. Estimate that number to be much higher when your pores are dilated due to exercise.)

  2. Blocked pores. When you exercise, you sweat (duh). But if your pores are covered in heavy, occlusive makeup, your pores will be hindered from optimum performance. This can lead to clogged pores, which of course can lead to increased breakouts.

  3. Natural beauty! We think natural beauty is the most empowering! You’re going to get a natural cheek highlight when you get your glisten on, anyway!

If you are plugging your ears right now, we get it.

Some people prefer to wear makeup when out and about, and that’s okay! We’re not here to makeup-shame anyone. If you must wear makeup while gettin’ your sweat on, follow these tips:

  1. Go mineral. Opt for light mineral makeup instead of a heavy liquid foundation. This will cause fewer complications for your pores.

  2. Lip color. Brighten up your look with a bold lip. For added moisture, opt for a tinted lip balm instead of lip stick, which can be drying.

  3. The eyes have it. There’s nothing wrong with a coat of mascara to make your eyes pop.

Final words on skincare and exercise:

  • PROTECT. Always wear sunscreen if you are outdoors (regardless of the weather or season). Use a mineral-based sunscreen, which can help even complexion.

  • CLEANSE. Always wash your face thoroughly after exercise.

  • AVOID GERMS. Gym equipment can be pretty dirty – crawling with bacteria in fact. Avoid touching your face in between reps to prevent that bacteria from transferring to your precious pores.
